Hello Parents,
I hope all is well. Just a reminder, please send the novel Tiger Rising to school by Tuesday. This was the novel that was listed on the school supply list that was sent home with students in June. We are beginning our second reading unit and will be using this novel to help learn different concepts. If you have not ordered the book, it is available on Amazon or you can obtain it locally from Bookies. I have found that books are a little cheaper from Bookies. https://www.bookiesbookstores.com/ I will be sending home Xtramath log in information for each student. Each night students are expected to practice their math facts using Xtramath. This will help to improve their fact fluency. The upcoming math units will focus on multiplication and division. We will eventually start fractions, so fact fluency is essential to help students successfully navigate through fractions. I would like to clarify any confusion that might have arisen with Google Classroom. Google Classroom is a platform that I will be using throughout the year to post classroom assignments and homework. So, assignments that appear in the classroom feed are not always meant for homework. I encourage you to ask your students about the assignments that were completed in class so you can have an idea or understanding of the wonderful learning that is happening in our classroom. Also, at the end of each week, you will receive an email summary of any assignments or announcements that were posted in Google Classroom. If it is a classwork assignment, then it was completed in the classroom and you will not need to complete it at home. If the assignment is completed at home, it will not receive credit. So, please utilize the agenda to verify which assignments are assigned for homework. Have a wonderful weekend!

Parents,
We are working on summarizing a text and writing a good summary, in Reading. To help the students master the skill, I am asking that they all read the same text. I have assigned Because of Winn-Dixie as the text for this week. Reading the same text, will help me to check for mastery and give valuable feedback. It would be challenging to read 31 novels and truly help each student with this skill. Friday Folders went home yesterday. Please sign and return the manila folder as soon as possible. I will send the folder home again this Friday along with the Week 5 Progress Report. The math test was also sent home on Monday. Also, just a reminder the Timeline Projects are due on Thursday, October 3rd. I am excited to see the projects. Reading Logs are also due on Friday. Thank you for your understanding! Thank you to all who were able to attend Curriculum Night! If you were unable to attend, I sent home the handouts with the students on Friday. I am also attaching the packet to this post. I did not get an opportunity to send home Friday Folders on Friday. There were a lot of unforeseen activities that occurred on Friday, so I ran out of time. I will send home the folders on Monday. Thank you for you patience! Upcoming Important Events Timeline Projects are due this Thursday, October 3rd. Progress Reports will be sent home ton Friday, October 4th.
Dear Parents,
We have officially completed 3 weeks of 3rd grade! It has been a joy getting to know all the students. I have really enjoyed this week because we have started to delve into the curriculum and deepen our classroom conversations. I will post a weekly update recapping the wonderful things taking place in the classroom. I look forward to meeting all of you at Curriculum Night. Just a friendly reminder, please remember to check and sign homework agendas each night. Have a wonderful weekend! Weekly Updates: Reading: This week's focus was "How do readers really engage with a book?" Students practiced different strategies to help the focus and improve their comprehension. Student's also complete reflection sheets to that helped them think about how they read and how to improve so that they improve their comprehension skills. This week a reading log will be sent home on Monday and it is due on Friday morning. Each week students will have a weekly home reading log due on Fridays. Students should be reading at least 20 minutes each night. Math: Math we will continue to work on place value and building out place value strategies. In addition to making sure that the student learns how to do the skill, I will be reinforcing the conceptual understanding of place value. Students take notes on the daily skills and concepts. The notes are a great resource to help with homework at home. Writing: We are currently brainstorming topics for our personal narratives. Some weekends, students will bring home their Weekend News journals to write about 1 event over the weekend. They are not expected to recap every day of the weekend, just one event from one day. For example, the student can write about going to out to dinner at the Cheesecake Factory on Saturday. Social Studies: We are will continue to work on timelines and their identity maps. Students will complete a timeline project at home describing who they are in the world. I will send home the project guidelines and description on Monday. This project is due on Thursday, October 3, 2019. Class Dojo: The weekly Dojo reports will be sent home on Fridays. Each week the students should earn at least 15 points. The report details the positive and negative points your student received for the week. I encourage you to speak with your student regarding the “needs work” points. In an effort to help the students continue to build independence and grow in responsibility, I am asking them to reflect with you on their weekly behavior. Please sign and return the forms every Monday. These are the behavioral areas that students can earn positive Dojo points: going above and beyond, being brave, being resilient, being a leader, being a participant, being respectful, being helpful, actively participating in independent reading, being on task, being prepared, being a team player and working hard. (other areas might be added throughout the year) These are the behavioral areas that students can earn need work Dojo points: being disrespectful, being unkind, disrupting instruction, missing homework, not following directions, being off task, using physical contact, being unprepared for class, talking during independent work time and playing around. (other areas might be added throughout the year) Important Dates September 26th- Curriculum Night from 5:30-7:00 October 3rd - Timeline Project due Thank you and enjoy the rest of your weekend! See you all on Thursday! Parents,
It was a very exciting first week! We have all learned so many new things about each other. We also welcomed our new classmates to our class and Lenart! I am looking forward to a fantastic journey this year. Below are a few end of the week updates. Thanks and have a great weekend! Resource Classes Monday-Music Tuesday-PE and Spanish Wednesday-Music Thursday-PE Friday-Technology NWEA Schedule 3rd grade will be testing for NWEA Reading on Wednesday (9/11/2019) at 8:00am. The NWEA Math test will be on Friday (9/13/2019) at 8:00AM. Please make sure that your child is well rested in preparation for the test. Parent Volunteers If you would like to volunteer in our classroom or chaperone a field trip, you will need to complete the volunteer process through CPS. If you were approved last school year, you MUST renew your application. The field trips in 3rd grade will need level 1 status. So, if you plan on helping out please select the level 1 option. It will ensure a better opportunity for your participation. If you are a CPS employee, you will also have to complete the process. Please click this link to access the CPS volunteer application HERE. Back to School Forms A back to school packet was sent home with students. Please complete the booklet of forms and return them to school. The forms need to be turned into the office as soon as possible. These forms need to be updated and completed every year. Thank you to all parents that submitted the forms last week. Thank you, Mrs. Juarez |
